Dr. Boris Ephimovich Zhilyaev, born on February 8, 1940, in Kemerovo, Russia, is a distinguished astrophysicist and Chief Scientist at the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. A graduate of Kyiv State University (1962), he began his scientific career at the same observatory, serving in various roles including Junior Fellow, Scientific Secretary, and Head of Laboratory from 1962 to 2025. He earned his Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences degree in 1970 from the Sternberg State Astronomical Institute at Moscow State University, and later obtained his Doctor of Sciences degree in 2015 from the Main Astronomical Observatory of NAS of Ukraine. In 1980, he was awarded the academic title of Senior Researcher in astrophysics. Dr. Zhilyaev has made significant contributions to observational astrophysics, including organizing an international network of synchronized high-speed photometric (HSPh) telescopes capable of detecting microsecond stellar variations with a sensitivity of up to 0.001 magnitude. In recognition, the minor planet 14346 Zhilyaev was named in his honor. He has actively participated in international scientific collaborations, such as the "Astronomy in the Elbrus Region" project (2015–2020), and serves on the editorial board of Kinematics and Physics of Celestial Bodies and as a referee for Astronomische Nachrichten. He is also a member of the European Astronomical Society. Since 2006, Dr. Zhilyaev has mentored Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD students from the Astronomy and Space Physics Department of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. His international recognition includes a 1995–1996 INTAS grant for research on stellar microvariability in collaboration with Canadian institutions. Dr. Zhilyaev is the author of over 140 scientific publications.
